Moving without an elevatorwithout stress.

Turn-of-the-century buildings, narrow stairwells and the fourth floor without an elevator — how we plan a calm move even when the carrying distance is long.

Step 1

Why it takes longer — and costs more

A move on the fourth floor without an elevator can take twice as long as the same volume in a building with an elevator. Carriers walk stairs with heavy boxes, rest more often and need breaks to avoid injury. On Söder and in central Stockholm, many turn-of-the-century buildings have no elevators at all — so we plan with a third carrier and a longer moving day.

Step 2

Prepare the stairwell

Protect walls and railings with cloth or blankets — partly to avoid damaging the building, partly to ease passage. Secure any light fixtures, remove loose mats in the entrance and unlock basement doors in advance.

Checklist

  • Protect railings and walls in the stairwell
  • Remove loose mats in the entrance
  • Unlock basement and attic doors
  • Notify neighbours about moving day
  • Make sure the door code works for the movers

Step 3

Heavy furniture — what should you do yourself?

If possible, disassemble beds, tables and bookshelves in advance. We're happy to handle assembly at the new address, but a flat-packed piece carries itself in the stairwell. For pianos, read our dedicated guide.

Step 4

How the price is affected

For buildings without an elevator we add a surcharge of about 10–25% depending on floor, number of boxes and heaviest piece of furniture. For moves to the ground floor or with a large elevator, the surcharge disappears entirely. We always quote a fixed price so you know the cost before moving day.

Frequently asked

Questions & answers.

How much more expensive is moving without an elevator?+

Usually 10–25% depending on floor and furniture density. We specify the surcharge in the quote.

How long does a move on the 4th floor without an elevator take?+

A 2-room apartment normally takes 6–8 hours with three movers instead of two.

Are more carriers needed?+

Yes, we often add a third mover to reduce carrying distances and keep the pace calm.

Can you fit a two-seater sofa in without an elevator?+

Usually yes — we angle through the stairwell opening. In really narrow stairwells we may need to disassemble temporarily.
