How to packfor your move.

Packing well is an art in itself. With the right materials, the right order and the right labels, moving day becomes calm — and nothing breaks along the way.

Step 1

Get the right packing materials

Good materials are the difference between calm packing and stressful packing. Buy or rent proper moving boxes — supermarket boxes rarely hold up for books or china. We recommend two sizes: standard for most things and book boxes for heavy items.

Complement with packing paper, bubble wrap, packing tape, marker pens and a sturdy pair of scissors. For the wardrobe, wardrobe boxes with a hanging bar are invaluable — clothes stay on the hanger straight into the new wardrobe.

Checklist

  • 30–100 moving boxes depending on home size
  • Wardrobe boxes with hanging bar
  • Bubble wrap and packing paper
  • Wide packing tape + tape gun
  • Marker pens in two colours
  • Moving blankets for furniture

Step 2

Pack in the right order

Start 3–4 weeks before the move with what isn't used daily: books, ornaments, seasonal clothes, holiday decorations and the storage room. Then comes the wardrobe, living room and bedroom. The kitchen and bathroom are packed last — often the morning before moving day.

Need an overview of the timeline — see our moving checklist week by week.

Checklist

  • Pack storage and attic first
  • Then books, ornaments, seasonal items
  • Wardrobe and linen closet
  • Living room and bedroom
  • Kitchen and bathroom last (the evening before)
  • Keep a first-night bag

Step 3

Protect fragile items the right way

Glass, china and electronics need special care. Wrap each item individually in packing paper or bubble wrap and fill any empty space with crumpled paper — things should not be able to move inside the box. Heavy items always at the bottom, light on top.

Paintings and mirrors are taped with a large X over the glass (catches any cracks) and wrapped in bubble wrap. TVs are best packed in their original box if you still have it.

Checklist

  • Wrap each glass/plate individually
  • Fill all empty space with crumpled paper
  • Heavy items at the bottom of the box
  • Tape an X over paintings and mirrors
  • Label fragile boxes clearly
  • Disassemble lamps and pendants

Step 4

Label so set-up is fast

A well-labelled box saves hours in the new home. Write on two sides (not on top — they're often covered in the stack) with the room the box belongs to and a few words about the contents. Use colour coding: one colour per room.

Mark the box with the most important kitchen and bathroom items as "Open first" — it should be the first one out at the new address.

Checklist

  • Label on two sides — not on top
  • Room + brief contents
  • Colour code per room (optional)
  • Mark fragile in red
  • Write 'Open first' on one box
  • Number when storing: 1/40, 2/40 …

Step 5

Disassemble and prepare furniture

Beds, dining tables, bookshelves and kitchens should be disassembled the evening before the move. Put screws in a zip bag taped to the furniture itself — that way nothing goes missing. Empty drawers and wardrobes completely; not even clothes should be left inside during a lift, they easily break.

For private moves, disassembly and assembly are included with us — let us know in the quote so we count time for it.

Checklist

  • Disassemble beds and large furniture
  • Screws in a bag, taped to the furniture
  • Empty drawers and wardrobes completely
  • Take down curtains and paintings
  • Unlock and turn off appliances the day before
  • Defrost the freezer in good time

Frequently asked

Questions & answers.

How many boxes do I need?+

Count on 10–15 boxes per room. A 2-room apartment usually fits in 30–40 boxes, a villa in 60–100. It's better to have too many than too few.

What do I pack first?+

Start with what you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, ornaments and decor. Kitchen, bathroom and everyday clothes are packed last.

How do I protect paintings and mirrors?+

Tape an X over the glass, wrap in bubble wrap or moving blanket and always store standing up — never lying flat.

Can you pack for me?+

Yes, we offer a full packing service. Many customers choose it for kitchens, wardrobes or the entire household — it's faster and reduces the risk of damage.
