Step 1

Why piano moving requires experience

An upright piano normally weighs 200–350 kg, a grand 300–550 kg. The weight is unevenly distributed — most of it sits in the mechanism and the cast iron frame. Without the right straps, plates and technique you risk both the instrument and the carriers' backs. We use piano straps with shoulder support and always at least three experienced carriers for a grand.

Step 2

Prepare the piano move

Close the piano lid and lock it if possible. Remove loose music stands. Measure the stairwell turns and elevator opening in advance — we're happy to do an on-site visit before quoting a fixed price.

For grand pianos we remove the legs and pedal lyre on site, lay the piano on its side on a piano board and secure it with straps. At the new address we reassemble everything.

Checklist

  • Measure stairwells and elevator opening in advance
  • Lock the piano lid
  • Note the grand's serial number for insurance
  • Make sure parking is close to the entrance

Step 3

Tuning after the move

The piano needs to acclimatise to new temperature and humidity conditions — at least two weeks, preferably a month. Tune too early and you usually have to do it again. Avoid placing the piano against external walls or near radiators.

Step 4

What does a piano move in Stockholm cost?

An upright between two addresses in central Stockholm: approx. SEK 2,500 – 4,500 after RUT. Grand piano: SEK 5,000 – 9,500. Surcharges apply for floors without elevators or particularly narrow stairwells — for example in many buildings on Södermalm and in Vasastan. We always quote a fixed price after a short on-site visit or photo walk-through.
