Moving checklistweek by week.

A calm move begins long before the truck rolls up. This checklist takes you from eight weeks before the move to the week after — so nothing is forgotten and nothing becomes a rush.

Step 1

8 weeks before: plan the move

This is where the foundation for a calm move is laid. Decide on a moving date, scout your new home, and start comparing quotes from moving companies — we recommend at least three. Ask for a personal walk-through instead of a template, so a fixed price can be given right away.

This is also when you start taking stock of your belongings. What goes with you, what to sell, donate or throw away? The smaller the volume, the smoother the move.

Checklist

  • Decide moving date and move-in day
  • Request quotes from 2–3 moving companies
  • Inventory your belongings — sort, sell, donate
  • Book storage if needed
  • Cancel current lease in writing

Step 2

4 weeks before: book and prepare

Now you confirm the moving company and start gathering packing materials. Order boxes, markers, bubble wrap and packing tape — count on around 30–40 boxes for a 2-room apartment and 60–80 for a villa.

Cancel or transfer contracts for electricity, internet, home insurance and any subscriptions. Start packing things you rarely use: books, seasonal clothes, holiday decorations.

Checklist

  • Confirm moving company and time
  • Order packing materials: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper
  • Cancel/transfer electricity, broadband, home insurance
  • Book move-out cleaning — preferably the same company as the move
  • Start packing books, seasonal clothes and decor

Step 3

2 weeks before: address change and practicalities

Register your move with the Tax Agency and order mail forwarding from Svensk Adressändring. Notify your employer, doctor, insurance providers, banks and subscriptions.

Book a parking permit if you're moving in central Stockholm — or let the moving company handle it. More practical details are in our guide on address change and who to notify.

Checklist

  • Register move with the Swedish Tax Agency
  • Order mail forwarding via Svensk Adressändring
  • Update address with employer, bank, insurance
  • Book parking permit for the moving truck
  • Cancel newspapers, food and flower subscriptions

Step 4

The week before: finish packing

Pack everything except the absolute essentials. Label every box clearly with room and brief contents — it saves hours during unpacking. Empty the freezer and fridge, prepare a "first night bag" with toiletries, chargers, sheets and a change of clothes.

Need more detailed tips: read our guide on how to pack for the move.

Checklist

  • Finish packing all rooms except daily-use items
  • Label boxes: room + brief contents
  • Empty and defrost the freezer
  • Pack a first-night bag
  • Confirm time with the moving company

Step 5

Moving day: calm and structured

When the team arrives: walk through the belongings, point out particularly fragile items and explain any obstacles in the stairwell. Stay reachable throughout the day, even if you don't carry anything yourself. Check the home before you leave — every cupboard, balcony and storage room.

On arrival, point out where the furniture should go. With proper labelling on the boxes, set-up goes quickly and you can sleep in your own beds the very first evening.

Checklist

  • Meet the movers and walk through the belongings
  • Check every room, cupboard and storage before leaving
  • Hand over keys as agreed
  • Direct rooms during set-up at the new address
  • Check belongings against the inventory list

Step 6

The week after: wrap up and settle in

Carry out the move-out cleaning in the old home — or let the moving company do it with an inspection guarantee. Hand back keys and read the final electricity meter. Unpack in the order you actually use the rooms, not alphabetically.

Register at a new health centre, update your driving licence and sign a new home insurance contract if you haven't already. Then the move is truly complete.

Checklist

  • Complete move-out cleaning in the old home
  • Read final electricity and water meters
  • Hand back all keys per the contract
  • Unpack room by room
  • Register at a new health centre
