Step 1

The Swedish Tax Agency — population register

The first thing you do is register your move with the Swedish Tax Agency. The easiest way is via the e-service on skatteverket.se with BankID — it takes two minutes. Register at the earliest one week before move-in, at the latest one week after. If several people live in the household, each must register.

The Tax Agency automatically notifies certain other agencies — the Social Insurance Agency, the Pensions Agency, the Transport Agency and the Employment Service. Everyone else you need to contact yourself.

Checklist

  • Register your move with the Tax Agency via BankID
  • Register per person — children separately
  • Earliest 1 week before, latest 1 week after
  • Save the receipt from the registration

Step 2

Mail forwarding

Order mail forwarding from Svensk Adressändring — then all your mail is automatically sent to your new address for the period you've chosen (typically 6 or 12 months). It costs a few hundred kronor but saves both time and the risk of important mail going missing.

Complement with a note in the old mailbox showing your forwarding address for parcels — parcel forwarding doesn't always work as smoothly as regular mail.

Checklist

  • Order mail forwarding at adressandring.se
  • Choose period: 6 or 12 months
  • Note in the old mailbox with new address
  • Also notify your email contacts of the new address

Step 3

Bank, insurance & finance

Banks, credit card companies and insurance companies are not updated automatically. Log in to each online bank and update the address. If you're a customer at several banks — do it everywhere. Home insurance must be adjusted for the new home, and the premium often changes.

Don't forget pension and fund companies, your tax/accounting consultant and any business addresses if you run a company.

Checklist

  • Online bank — update address
  • Credit cards & debit cards
  • Home insurance + car insurance
  • Pension and fund companies
  • Accounting consultant
  • Any business address / Bolagsverket

Step 4

Subscriptions & memberships

The list here is usually longer than people think. Electricity, broadband, mobile, insurance, newspaper, streaming services, gym membership, food and flower subscriptions. Set aside an evening, make a list and tick them off one by one.

Cancel or transfer electricity and broadband 2–4 weeks before the move — these are the ones that take longest to activate at the new address. For the full timeline, see our moving checklist week by week.

Checklist

  • Electricity (cancel / transfer)
  • Broadband & TV
  • Mobile & landline
  • Newspaper and digital subscriptions
  • Streaming, gym, food and flower boxes
  • Instalment plans and leasing

Step 5

Other authorities & healthcare

Register with a new health centre in the area. If your children are in preschool or school — notify the municipality and plan any school transfer well in advance. When changing municipality, certain benefits and fees may change.

If you have pets, the vet's address also needs updating, as well as chip and insurance registers for pets.

Checklist

  • Register at a new health centre
  • Dentist and optician
  • Preschool / school / after-school
  • Vet + pet insurance
  • Library and municipal services
  • Unemployment fund if changing industries

Frequently asked

When should I do the address change?+

Register your move with the Swedish Tax Agency at the earliest one week before move-in and at the latest one week after. Mail forwarding via Svensk Adressändring can be ordered as early as 5 days before.

Is the address change free?+

The registration with the Tax Agency is free. Mail forwarding via Svensk Adressändring costs a fee (approx. SEK 245 for 6 months, prices may change).

Do I have to notify the bank separately?+

Yes — the Tax Agency's registered address is shared automatically with some authorities, but not with banks, insurance companies or private actors. You need to contact those yourself.

With mail forwarding, all post is automatically sent to your new address. Without forwarding, it ends up with the new tenant — who may throw it away or send it back.
